Object picket
2023
Object, hand embroidery on rope.

The work began as a reflection on censorship, which later became a reflection on the sign in general.
Banned
words, keywords that the police use to navigate through chat rooms.
The longer
you are in a totalitarian regime, the more words are banned. They can be
ordinary words, colours or even a rainbow. As I
read more and more crazy messages, I wondered how far censorship, a
totalitarian organisation of the message that turns letters into
hypnosis for the malleable mind, could go.
The
work “Object Picket” is based on a simple utilitarian thing, but like
any simplicity it has the potential to become an event.
“To
avoid being seen, put it in the most visible place”.
In
this work I use the art of concealment as a commentary on the balancing act
between visibility and subversion.
The word “implicate” serves as a
signifier, offering a literal interpretation that delves into notions of
engagement and implication. On
the one hand, the work deals with a series of semiotic concepts, the denotate and
the connotate. But within the object, these two
components are combined and become a code, open to interpretation by the viewer
in relation to his or her experience.
